White House border czar Tom Homan defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an interview with CBS News correspondent Camilo Montoya-Galvez by comparing ICE custody death rates to state and federal prison systems and pointing out that the detained population had doubled. [1, 2]
* Defense on Custody Deaths: Homan responded to questions about rising deaths in ICE custody by asserting that ICE's in-custody death rates remain lower than those of state and federal prison systems. [1]
* Population Increase: He noted that the total number of individuals in ICE detention had more than doubled (reaching roughly 74,000), which contributed to higher overall numbers. [1, 3]
* Medical Screening: Homan highlighted that ICE conducts initial medical reviews within 48 hours of intake and that the agency operates under strict industry detention standards. [1, 3]
* Counter-Questioning: He challenged the framing of the statistics by asking why critics do not compare ICE's rates to general prison populations or look at how many lives are medically evaluated and treated upon arrival. [1, 3]
