Here’s what is currently established:
Matthew Lanske, 21, was shot three times in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood in the early hours of September 6, 2026.
According to police/family accounts reported by local media, Lanske and friends encountered an alleged street takeover. During an attempted armed robbery of his friend Isaac Elijah Rios, 20, Lanske intervened and was shot.
Lanske suffered two gunshot wounds to the stomach and another that shattered his pelvis and struck a major artery.
Rios was also shot and subsequently died at the hospital.
Despite his injuries, Lanske reportedly walked roughly two blocks looking for help. His family says people were standing around recording him rather than calling 911.
He eventually texted 911 himself. Police found him and he was taken for emergency treatment. He spent two days on life support and has undergone multiple surgeries.
His family says he attempted to get into a nearby 7-Eleven, but the doors were locked and he was unable to get inside. That account comes primarily from his family; I would not treat the allegation that employees deliberately "refused to help" as independently established fact without additional evidence.
As of the reporting I found, no arrests had been announced.
One particularly important correction to the headline: he did not actually "bleed out." He survived. His injuries were life-threatening, and his family says he believed he was going to die, but emergency responders ultimately got him to the hospital.
The part about people filming instead of helping is also being reported by multiple outlets, but the details of exactly who filmed what, who was present, and what the 7-Eleven employees knew at the time are still based substantially on family/witness accounts rather than a completed police investigation.
It's an especially disturbing case because Lanske appears to have been trying to intervene on behalf of his friend, and then, after being critically wounded himself, apparently had to summon emergency help on his own.
