The Department of Justice (DOJ) has escalated an expanding criminal and civil probe into the 2026 Alaska U.S. Senate race following a New York Times report detailing alleged efforts to recruit a second candidate named Dan Sullivan to run against Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.

Key Developments:

The Investigation and Subpoenas: The DOJ issued dozens of new grand jury subpoenas and record preservation notices targeting Democratic officials, the campaign of Democratic candidate Mary Peltola, and retired schoolteacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. (the second candidate on the ballot).

Refusal Under Oath: Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy stated that Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. refused to go under oath during the initial phases of state-level inquiries into his candidacy.

Civil Lawsuit and "Conspiracy" Claims: The Trump administration amended a federal civil lawsuit—seeking to block certification of the Alaska Senate race if the Republican incumbent loses—adding allegations of a "conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the electoral process" tied to the reporting.

Denials: The Peltola campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) have denied any involvement in or coordination with the effort to put Daniel J. Sullivan on the ballot.

Daniel S. Sullivan has maintained that his opponent's entry was designed to confuse voters, though the Alaska Supreme Court previously ruled that Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. was qualified to remain on the ballot.
