California realtor Wanying Zhang, also known as “Heather,” was arrested at LAX for allegedly spying for China by surveilling the son of Taiwan’s president Ching-Te Lai.
Zhang was accused of working with handlers from the People’s Republic of China to conduct surveillance on Ting-Yu Lai in Seattle, Washington, where he works for electronics giant Philips.
This arrest is the latest in a series of high-profile cases involving allegations of Chinese government influence and espionage in California, following cases involving former Arcadia mayor Eileen Wang and former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell.
