Ed Dawson, the 55-year-old head football coach at Cornell High School, died after suffering a sudden medical emergency on the sideline during a game against Rochester High School.
The Incident
During the second quarter of the Week 9 game in Rochester, Pennsylvania, Coach Dawson informed an assistant coach that he was not feeling well. He went to sit on the team bench and eventually lay down.
Athletic Director Bill Sacco reported that shortly after, Dawson became unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel administered CPR on the sideline before rushing him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Dispatch audio later indicated the response was for an apparent cardiac arrest. Following the emergency, the game was immediately halted and called off, with Cornell leading 16-6 at the time.
Game Completion Status
The game was not finished. Following the medical emergency, the game was permanently halted during the second quarter. The WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Athletic League) later determined that the game would not be resumed or made up.
It has officially been ruled a no-contest, meaning the statistics and score from the uncompleted game will not count toward either team's official season record.

In addition to his 12-season tenure leading the football program, Dawson served as Cornell's assistant dean of students. He is widely credited with resurrecting a football program that had nearly disappeared, guiding the team to its first conference title in 36 years in 2019 and an outright title in 2021.
Cornell School District Superintendent Dr. Aaron Thomas described the community as heartbroken, crushed, and in shock, emphasizing that Dawson was a vital leader and father figure to his players. The district held a community memorial service and arranged for counseling resources to support students and staff.
